Woohyun stared at Suyeol’s unmoving form next to him. His heart had stopped when she had moved away, and at that moment he had thought it couldn’t get any worse, but he was wrong. It could be a lot worse. What did she mean, exactly? He knew he hadn’t been quite himself lately but was it as bad as she made it out to be?
“Yah,” he said in a shaky voice, holding her shoulder and gently shaking her, “talk to me, tell me what you mean. Don’t be like this! Please!” his pitch increased with each plea. Still Suyeol would not turn to look at him. He felt her trembling beneath him, trying hard to keep control over her emotions.
“You’re so different now. You hardly talk to me, your smile has all but faded away, you keep all kinds of secrets with your texts and phone calls… I… I just don’t know how I fit into your life anymore. I don’t understand the person you’ve become.” His heart leapt to his throat at her words. She was right and he knew it. He had tried to pretend that none of it was a big deal or that different, but it had been. He was about to lay next to her and start explaining everything when she continued. “And the girls in the bathroom…” here she choked up and started crying softly. He was extremely alarmed by these words. “They said… they said you were talking to Yaeso-ssi about your love confession to her in middle school. They I was obviously wasting my time because you weren’t interested. And lately it seems… like that’s true,” her voice trailed off in a whisper.
Woohyun was biting his lip hard to keep the tears back. He grabbed her shoulder to pull her closer but she slipped out from underneath him and left the room. Jumping up immediately, he followed her out to the kitchen. Fiercely he wrapped his arms around her and turned her to face him. He stared into her eyes, still visible even in the dark room. Her face was tear-stained and she looked nervous. How he hated that she looked that way because of him. He shook his head fervently.
“Nothing about the way I feel about you has changed. NOTHING, ok? Not one single thing. I’m sorry I’ve been distant lately. I didn’t want to admit to myself that I was acting so differently, but it’s true and I know it was wrong to not explain things to you. I didn’t want you to worry, but it ended up making you worry more. Mianhae, I wish I could go back and change things, but it’s too late now. The damage is done.” He stroked her hair and wiped away her tears. “I’m so sorry, Suyeol-ah… so sorry,” he said, his voice laced with the pain he had caused her. Her lip quivered and he rushed to kiss it, desperate to make everything better. He was relieved to feel her kissing back right away. He pulled her closer, curving his body to fit hers and lacing fingers between hers. He took a big sigh before continuing.
“I’m worried about my parents. With the school term ending soon, they’ll expect me to live with them during the summer. I didn’t want to tell you because I thought it would be unnecessary stress on you. I’m also worried because I haven’t had much contact with them at all this semester, and I’m concerned they’ll decide to ‘surprise’ me with a visit. I know what they’re like, Suyeol. I know what they’ll say. I’m not going to risk losing you over it. I’m NOT leaving you. And whatever those girls said in the bathroom, they’re delusional. They don’t know me and they don’t know how I feel about you, what I’ve promised to you, and how I intend to keep those promises as long as I’m alive. Arraso? Don’t believe them, believe me! I’ll become a better person, I promise!”
“I don’t need you to be a better person, I just need you to be honest with me, Woohyun-ah. If I don’t know what’s going on, then I don’t know how to react or what to think. Please just be up-front with me. You always tell me I don’t have to do things alone, but the same goes for you, ok? I want to help you whenever I can. Fresh eyes on a situation can be more beneficial than you think.” Suyeol held his cheeks in her hands and gazed at him before moving to kiss him gently. He could feel her love and care poured out in her words and actions. He felt so stupid now for trying to do everything alone, going exactly against everything he had ever told her.
“I promise, from now on I’ll be honest, ok? There are still a couple of things I can’t tell you, for your own safety and because of a request from the other person, but whenever I can I’ll tell you. Thank you…” Woohyun choked up again and pulled her flush against him, putting a hand on the back of her head to kiss her as deeply as possible. They held each other in the dark, touching and caressing each other’s fears and pains away. After a while Woohyun carried her back to bed, where they tangled themselves together and fell asleep, more connected than ever.
